The song I picked is "Free" by Zac Brown Band. Zac Brown Band is mostly know for their mix of country, southern rock, bluegrass, however they often mix in gospel and spiritual elements into their music. I believe that Zac Brown Band keeps the emotional and community spirit of spirituals alive, even as they incorporate country and rock. The reason I picked "Free" because this song is very uplifting and soulful. It repeats: Just as free. Free as we'll ever be. Just as free. Free as we'll ever be. Ever be" I also feel that the melody and harmony carry a gospel like feel, while the lyrics reflect a sense of faith and emotional spirt that traditional spirituals also have. Although their performance many not be an example of a spiritual, the meaning behind this song and how it is portrayed have similar characteristics of spirituals.
