The song I ultimately chose for this assignment is "John the Revelator." This song is an African American spiritual song that goes back to the early 20th century. John the Revelator has many different lines that directly come from the book of Revelation. One example is the line "Tell me who's that writing? John the Revelator". Over the years, this song has adapted many different styles and forms as far as the style it's presented, going from Blind Willie Johnson in 1930 to more recent artists like Son of the House. This just shows how powerful this piece is for so many people and how the messages can be interpreted in so many different ways. What drew me to this song and why I chose to write about it is because of how well it captures spiritual depth and African American Sacred Music. For me, this piece shows how music can be sacred to many people across generations.
