Lynch Prompt 2: Community & Solidarity Musical Performance

When I thought about music that creates a sense of community, gospel choir was the first thing that came to mind. One performance I found that I enjoyed is the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir singing Total Praise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0PPZyF-Bzo

What stands out to me the most is how connected everyone is. The singers rely on one another, their voices mix into a large, powerful sound, and the audience doesn't just sit back and watch. People are clapping, standing, and responding to the music, giving the impression that the entire room is participating. Gospel choirs, like previous camp meetings of the Second Great Awakening, use repetition, call-and-response, and simple lyrics to ensure that everyone can participate. That's why it's so exciting; it's more than simply a song; it's a feeling of solidarity and community.
