The spiritual that I chose for Module #3 is Mary Don’t You Weep. Based on Work’s three types I would categorize this spiritual as syncopated, segmented melody. There is an element of call and response in this spiritual. However, it isn’t the main focus. As well as the vocal melody is segmented and syncopated. The rhythm is off beat. As well as the melody is broken up and very staccato. Also later on in the spiritual there is a whole bunch of clapping, and it leads you to want to dance. Which is also another characteristic of this type of spiritual. So I would definitely categorize Mary Don’t You Weep as a syncopated, segmented melody.
