Simonelli Prompt #7: Song Discovery

A song that has been a powerful discovery to me and connects to what we have been studying in this course is “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” I learned this song in Module 4 and included a performance of it in my blog post then. I find this song so powerful because not only does it enhance what we have been learning about in terms of aspects of gospel music (and spirituals in particular), but it also has a message of a longing for freedom and the hope and promise of a better life beyond suffering. Similar messages come through in many songs we have learned, but this song has such simple lyrics to encompass the powerful message. I like that there are many different performances there are of this song as it is so popular, but that no two renditions are exactly the same.
