 For this prompt, I chose a performance by Sister Rosetta Tharpe of “Up Above My Head, I Hear Music in the Air.”

This performance is exciting because it shows why Tharpe is considered one of the most important figures in gospel history. Her guitar playing has the same drive and energy that later shaped rock and roll, and her voice carries so much confidence and joy. The mix of gospel feeling and powerful stage presence makes the whole performance stand out. Even today, the way she blends spiritual message with electrifying musicianship feels fresh and emotional.
