For my soul performance pick, I chose Amy Winehouse’s live performance of “Love Is a Losing Game”. What I love about this performance is the way she strips soul music down to something raw and almost fragile. She never over-sings the song; instead, she leans into restraint, which somehow makes the emotion hit even harder. Her phrasing feels like a conversation—loose, jazzy, a little behind the beat—and it reminds me of classic soul singers who let vulnerability be the power. What really stands out to me is how she blends genres so effortlessly. You can hear gospel phrasing, jazz sensibility, and deep soulfulness all in one. Even in such an understated performance, she manages to create a sense of intimacy that feels almost uncomfortable in how honest it is. That emotional transparency, paired with her unique tone, is why I think she remains one of the most compelling soul voices of the modern era.
