LaBarge Prompt #11

Aretha Franklin 1972 - MARY DON'T YOU WEEP

One of my favorite soul performances is Aretha Franklin’s 1972 live recording of “Mary, Don’t You Weep” from the Amazing Grace concert. What I love most is how effortlessly she bridges gospel and soul her voice moves from soft, prayerful lines to huge, soaring peaks that feel almost supernatural. The energy in the church, the call and response with the choir, and the raw power of her improvisation all show why she was called the Queen of Soul. It’s not just a performance, it feels like a moment of spiritual release for everyone in the room.
