One gospel song I l found that I like is Lucie E. Campbell’s “Something Within” (1919), performed by the Morgan State University Choir. Campbell wrote it after hearing a street evangelist say that “something within” kept him from playing the blues, a simple but powerful way to describe faith. In this version, the choir’s voices rise and fall, turning the old hymn into something personal and alive. Their harmonies and energy make you feel the meaning behind the words, showing how gospel music is more than just what’s written. It’s about putting your heart into it and letting that “something within” come through.
