I chose a YouTuber' rendition of Charles Tindley's "Stand By Me". I had clicked on it because the thumbnail was unassuming. Simply a man in his room with bookshelves. I'm glad I settled on it, because it was a superb recording of it. He made it personal with his voice and piano, changing some melody and chords to fit his style. However, these changes were minor, and he stayed close to "tradition". It's because of that respect for tradition and authenticity that I think it can be called personal. Just as pieces of classical music feel personal to people, despite all performances more or less following the exact same tempi, dynamics, notes, and articulations. It's the minor alterations that count. The context of the family connection (per the description) and singing at home are also important.
