One of the biggest takeaways for me in this course is realizing how gospel keeps changing while still holding onto its same core purpose. From spirituals, to early gospel with Dorsey and Mahalia Jackson, to quartets, choirs, and now holy hip-hop, every style we learned about shows how gospel adapts to each generation. Seeing the full history made me appreciate how flexible and influential gospel music actually is.
A favorite discovery for me was Kirk Franklin. I had heard some of his songs before, but I never understood how important he was in bringing hip-hop and modern production into gospel. Learning how he pushed the genre forward helped me hear his music in a new way.
