Oh Happy Day - The Edwin Hawkins Singers
One of my biggest takeaways from the course was seeing how deeply Black sacred music has shaped American music as a whole not just gospel, but soul, R&B, hip-hop, pop, and even contemporary worship styles. Understanding how spirituals evolved into gospel, and how gospel continues to influence modern genres, really highlighted how powerful this tradition is in both cultural and spiritual life. A favorite discovery for me was the Edwin Hawkins Singers’ “Oh Happy Day.” I’d heard the song before, but learning its history as a major crossover hit and seeing how its choral sound helped bring modern gospel into mainstream culture gave me a whole new appreciation for it. It’s joyful, musically rich, and a perfect example of gospel’s ability to reach across audiences.
