My song is “Steal Away to Jesus.” It’s one of those old spirituals that has a really deep meaning. On the outside it’s about faith and going to Jesus, but back then it was also a coded way for enslaved people to talk about escaping or meeting in secret. The line “Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus, I ain’t got long to stay here” really hits because it’s simple but heavy. Groups like the Fisk Jubilee Singers helped make it more known after slavery ended. Here’s a version of it: Steal Away – Fisk Jubilee Singers. I picked it because it’s straight up powerful and you can feel the history in it.
