The first thing I have noticed about the spiritual that I am currently doing, Deep River (I chose the one by Marian Anderson) is that there is no call and response. There is a strong emotional and spiritual meaning behind the song. It has a slow sustained long phrase melody which is connected to the emotional meaning behind the song. It is about crossing over the deep river into the camp ground which sybomlizes death and wanting cross into heaven in the afterlife. the reason why she is singing slowly is because of the sadness and the yearn that she has for something better.
