Quinn Prompt #5

For module 3's blog post, I chose the spiritual“Going to Shout All Over God’s Heaven." I think this song fits best into Work’s third type, the syncopated, segmented melody. The song is built on short yet powerful expressions. It has a steady rhythm that invites clapping and movement, giving it a lively, communal feel. "Going to Shout All Over God's Heaven" feels much more energetic and joyful as opposed to the other slower, drawn out melodies in other spirituals we have heard. The repetition of lines like “going to shout” makes it easy for a group to join in, turning the performance into a shared celebration. All of this makes it clear that the song belongs in the segmented, syncopated category, where rhythm and community expression are the main characters.
