Chedel- Prompt #4 - Modern Performance of a Spirtual

 For this prompt, I chose Kanye West’s “Selah” from his 2019 album Jesus Is King. The song stands out because it samples the New Jerusalem Choir’s performance of “Revelations 19:1,” a traditional gospel piece rooted in the African American spiritual tradition. What I find most powerful about this performance is how it blends old and new. The sampled choir grounds the track in the sound of worship and tradition, while Kanye layers modern hip-hop production on top. The result is something that feels both timeless and contemporary — it’s worship music reimagined for today. I picked this performance because it captures the spirit of a spiritual in a modern context. The choir gives the song a sense of reverence and collective energy, and Kanye’s verses ride that wave of intensity. Even if you don’t recognize the original spiritual, you can feel its weight in the atmosphere of the track. It shows how these songs are not just historical artifacts but living traditions that can be carried into new genres and generations.
