My lightbulb moment came when I realized how layered and intentional spirituals really are. Before this course, I mostly thought of them as simple songs of worship, but I’ve come to understand that they often carried hidden meanings, and deeper layers. They weren’t just expressions of faith but also strategies for resistance and unity within enslaved communities. Learning this made me think differently about music as a whole and how it can be both art and a tool for resilience. This has really changed the way I listen to spirituals and gospel music, because now I hear not just the melody and lyrics, but the history and lived experiences behind them.
