Zocko Prompt 6

The most significant "light bulb" moment that I have experienced in this course thus far would have to be realizing just how strongly connected current musical trends are with the historical and cultural backdrop in which these musical sounds and traditions were made and preserved, particularly through sampling. It was truly eye-opening to listen to hip-hop producers incorporating samples of gospel and spirituals into their work and appreciate the fact that the sounds that I am accustomed to only being preserved within the parameters of these designated "genres" are constantly being carried on through these alternate means. This was a monumental "light bulb" moment for me, as I now think of sampling as not only an innovative creative technique to craft new sounds but also as a way of paying homage and tribute to the creators and tradition bearers of these sounds and the cultures they reflect. It was also a powerful moment for me as it made me think deeply about issues of equity and how it is crucial to recognize where these sounds are coming from and who they belong to. It has truly changed the way I listen to music because I now search for these connections within the sounds.
