"Roll Jordan Roll" is about an African American spiritual and religious folk song created by enslaved African Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries. The most common and well know lyrics are "Roll, Jordan, roll. Roll, Jordan, roll. I want to go to heaven when I die. To hear old Jordan roll". The common meaning is how after death you cross the Jordan River to get to heaven. However, there is a deeper meaning behind this for enslaved people. Crossing the Jordan River into Heaven is also symbolic for freedom from Slavery. I choose thing song because it represents hope and spiritual resistance. I also choose this song because it creates a sense of strength and unity.
