Farrelly prompt #5

For module 3's blog post, I chose "John the Revelator." I ultimately decided on this song because it's a clear example of a call-and-response spiritual. In this spiritual, we hear a leader say, "Who's that writing?" With that said, we then hear the group respond by saying "John the Revolator." This directly connects to the Works categories, specifically Call and Response, as phrases are brief and always repetitive; we can see that John the Revelator is a call and response spiritual. To me, John the Revelator didn't seem to be a song that demonstrates slow, sustained, long-phrase melody, as it's pretty fast-paced. This song does add bits of syncopation it is not a syncopated, segmented melody. Overall, this song fits so well with call and response due to the short lines and repetition.
