I think “Steal Away to Jesus” fits best as a slow, sustained long-phrase melody. The way the lines are sung feels stretched out and emotional, like a prayer being carried on. It doesn’t have the back-and-forth style of call and response or the quick, syncopated rhythm of other spirituals. Instead, the long, drawn-out phrases give it a sense of longing and hope, which makes it powerful.
