Steal Away to Jesus is a well-known African American spirituals, written by Wallace Willis, an enslaved man in Oklahoma. Alexander Reid was a missionary who first popularized it when heard Wallace singing it and later he helped spread it . The song’s famous lyric is “Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus / I ain’t got long to stay here”, is powerful because it carries a double meaning.. Here’s a moving performance of it. I picked this song because it shows how spirituals blended faith with coded messages.
