One well-known spiritual is “Going to Shout All Over God’s Heaven,” which is also sometimes called “I Got Shoes” or “Heav’n, Heav’n.” This song expresses hope for freedom and equality in the afterlife, with refrains like “I got shoes, you got shoes, all of God’s children got shoes When I get to heaven gonna put on my shoes, I’m gonna walk all over God’s heaven.” These lyrics symbolized both spiritual salvation and the promise of freedom that enslaved people were denied on earth. The repetition and call-and-response style made the song easy to remember and powerful in communal settings. I chose this song because it shows how spirituals could carry double meanings. I was also intrigued by Louis Armstrong as I did a project on him in high school.
I had trouble finding any live performances of the song, but I did find a video of kids singing and acting out “I Got Shoes” that I have linked here. Cedarmont Kids - I Got Shoes
