Hetman Prompt 3: Spirituals

I chose the song Travelin’ Shoes sung by Clara ward and her group of famous gospel singers. This song is a spirited gospel number that unfolds as a dramatic, call-and-response spiritual; “Travelin’ shoes (got on my traveling shoes)”; with the refrain repeated constantly, signaling readiness for the journey to the afterlife. This ritual of reverence where shoes are remove before entering a holy place, signifying separation from the earthly world. In vivid verses, Death knocks first at the mother’s door, then the sinner’s challenging them to go, only for the mother to respond with preparation and triumph: “Got on my travelin’ shoes.” The sinner, unprepared, laments “ain’t got no travelin’ shoes,” and is overcome. I chose this song not only because of the catchy tune but because the underlying message of one's journey closer to God is super special and significant in this song. This Sogn is a beautiful piece to describe the journey to the afterlife and that is what drew me in to picking this song.
