For this prompt, I chose Kanye West’s performance of “Selah” with the Sunday Service Choir.
I chose this because it shows how a modern hip hop artist can use gospel and spiritual traditions in a new way. The song uses a strong choir singing “hallelujah,” call-and-response, and emotional power, which are all things we have studied in spirituals. Even though Kanye is known for rap and hip hop, this moment shows him turning to gospel roots and making them part of his music. I also like how it connects sacred and secular styles, the song was on a popular album and shared worldwide, but it still feels like church music. It shows that spirituals and gospel can still inspire and stay important in today’s music.
