Simonelli Prompt #5: Spiritual Type

For my Module 3 blog post, I chose “We Shall Overcome.” Based on Work’s three types of spirituals, I believe “We Shall Overcome” best fits into the slow, sustained long-phrase melody category. The words are sung slowly, with many of them being drawn out (or sustained) like “someday” is. The phrases come together to form complete sentences throughout the song, such as “Deep in my heart, I do believe, we shall overcome someday” rather than having short refrains or individual lines that do not connect. Additionally, although there are some call and response moments, it does not dominate the song.
