My biggest takeaway so far in this course was how important spirituals were for the creation of other types of music in the US. It is important to recognize the impact that these songs made by African Americans had on current music because things like this are often overlooked. There have been many instances where white people took credit for the accomplishments of African Americans, so learning about this was interesting to me. It was very moving to learn about the accomplishments of the Jubilee Singers from Fisk University, and their impact on the way some people viewed spirituals.
