The biggest takeaway I've had from this course so far is learning that spirituals and other gospel music are not strictly religious. From the untrained eye, the religious lyrics make spirituals sound like they only have meaning in a church; however, they are so much more than that. Spirituals were a form of expression for the black community and have many different interpretations that have nothing to do with religion. My knowledge on what spirituals are and what they mean to people has completely changed.
