In this history of gospel class, I discovered the voice of Mahalia Jackson, who has been called the “Queen of Gospel.” Listening to her sing “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” showed how her voice is full of emotion, hope, and strength. I felt like I could hear not just the music, but the stories and feelings behind it. Her songs make history feel present, showing how gospel music has shaped culture and connected people across generations. Experiencing her music this way gave me a whole new appreciation for the power of gospel and how it can inspire, comfort, and bring people together even decades later.
