St. John- Prompt #6: Light bulb moment

 I think the most important takeaway or light bulb moment I’ve had so far is how powerful spirituals are. Going into this course I had a little bit of prior knowledge about spirituals from a history standpoint. However, learning about the music side has truly opened my eyes and given me a lightbulb moment. I feel like spirituals make so much more sense to mean now after looking at it through a music lens. As a music major and soon to be history major you’d think I’d be able to look at both aspects together. However, my brain has always separated the two. Being able to put them together has helped me to have a light bulb moment and truly get a deeper understanding of spirituals. Especially when we learned about shape note singing. From a historical standpoint I knew how powerful spirituals were and the importance behind their purpose and lyrics. However, when I first heard the shape note singing and learning more about the music aspect. I was astonished. It was like everything clicked into place.
