LaBarge Prompt #6

My biggest takeaway so far has been realizing how deeply the history of gospel music is connected to the overall story of resilience, faith, and cultural creativity in America. I used to think of gospel mainly as a church based musical style, but this course has shown me that it’s much more, it’s a reflection of real experience, struggle, and hope that grew out of the spirituals and evolved through blues, jazz, and soul. The light bulb moment for me was understanding that gospel music isn’t just about religion it’s also about identity, community, and survival. Each era of gospel reflects how people used music to make sense of their situation and express faith in the face of hardship. Seeing that connection between spiritual expression and social history really changed the way I listen to and appreciate gospel today.
