One artist who was new to me was Paul Robinson. I encountered him a little before the module, where we learned about Spirituals as art music. It was back when we selected a spiritual for a previous blog post. He had my favorite version of "Jacob's Ladder" that I listened to. As I listened to a few more of his renditions and learned more about his life, I was surprised I'd never learned about him before. He has a very distinct voice that stands out as do many notable artists (Ella, Billie Holiday, Freddie, Crosby, Etc...). All of his recordings seem very personal with little accompaniment, letting his voice shine.
