Arizona Dranes is an artist who has been a discovery to me and has a very strong connection to what we’ve been studying. I feel like, throughout this course, the songs we have listened to are primarily by male artists or male groups. I chose this artist because I believe she is a very important figure in the early days of female involvement in this style of music, and she brings a new perspective that was previously lacking in male-dominated music. She is one of the first female contributors in the Pentecostal movement. She was a pianist and vocalist, and her songs had a profound impact. Listening to her songs like “God’s Got a Crown” helped me understand how early Pentecostal music was lively, personal, and deeply connected to the spiritual experiences of its community.
