I chose “Didn’t It Rain” by Sister Rosetta Tharpe (live performance, 1964 in Manchester, U.K.). This performance is great because you can feel her energy and joy coming through every note. It doesn't sound like she's just singing, she’s preaching through her guitar and voice. The mix of gospel spirit with the rock-and-roll edge shows how powerful and ahead of her time she was. It’s emotional, raw, and still feels new even decades later. You can tell she believed every word she sang.
