One of my favorite video performances by a soul singer is Marvin Gaye doing “What’s Going On” live (for example, his early-1970s performances later collected on What’s Going On Live). I love how he delivers a politically charged song with such gentleness and vulnerability. His voice floats over the groove, but you can still feel the hurt and urgency behind every line. The mix of jazz-soul sophistication in the band, his easy charisma onstage, and the way he turns a protest song into a kind of collective prayer is exactly what makes it stick with me.
