One of my favorite live soul performances is Aretha Franklin’s 1971 performance of “Dr. Feelgood” at the Fillmore West. I really enjoy how she owns the stage with such ease, going from soft, intimate phrasing to raw power in a matter of seconds. The thing that most impresses me is her complete control over the emotional rollercoaster—she doesn’t just sing the song, she *testifies* it, in a way only the Queen of Soul could. The band is right there with her on every step, but she’s clearly the engine behind everything, and I feel like this performance perfectly embodies what makes soul music so timeless: honesty, vulnerability, and pure fire. It’s one of those iconic moments where you know exactly why she changed music forever.
