One of the biggest takeaways from the history of gospel course was seeing how deeply gospel music has shaped all major American genres such as blues, jazz, R&B, soul, rock, hip-hop while constantly reinventing itself in response to social change and spiritual need. Understanding how gospel traveled from spirituals to Holiness churches to mass choirs and contemporary crossover artists really showed how powerful and adaptable the tradition is. My favorite discovery of the course was Mariah Jackson's "Move On Up a Little Higher." Even though you can't actually see her perform, the live edition captures how commanding and effortlessly emotional her voice is. You can clearly listen and understand why she became the defining gospel singer of her era.
