Simonelli Prompt #12: Biggest Takeaway

For me, the most important takeaway from this course is the impact that the history of gospel music has had on the modern music industry. I was surprised to learn how much of the music I listen to or my friends listen to is related to or stems from the gospel music we have listened to in this course. It is powerful to think about how one genre has changed overtime and bled into so much of what music is in our society today. I also did not know how much variety there was within gospel itself, so that was another takeaway for me. We learned about various styles, groups, and performers throughout the semester that are all very important to the history of gospel itself. As I listen to music now, I consider how these influential movements and figures impacted the music I hear.

A favorite recording of mine that I discovered in this class was Aretha Franklin's "Today I Sing the Blues." I think it is the perfect example of gospel's influence on other genres. I love how smooth her voice is when she performs this song (and any song), so I am very glad I was introduced to it!
