I went with this one because it’s a modern twist on one of the most famous spirituals. You still hear the original message and power in the lyrics, but the way she mixes it with R&B and hip hop production gives it a fresh sound. I think that’s what makes it stand out it connects the past and present. Back then, “Wade in the Water” carried coded meanings about escape and survival, and now it shows up in a style that today’s listeners can vibe with. To me, that proves spirituals aren’t stuck in history—they keep living on in new ways and still hit just as hard.
