I’m sticking with “Steal Away to Jesus.” Out of Work’s three types, I’d say it fits best as a slow, sustained long-phrase melody. The way the song stretches out the lines makes it feel heavy and emotional, which matches the meaning behind it. On the surface it’s about faith, but it also worked as a coded message for escape and secret meetings. It doesn’t really sound like a call-and-response chant, and it’s not syncopated or jumpy either. The power is in how long and drawn-out the phrases are, almost haunting, which makes you sit with the message. That’s why I think it belongs in the slow, sustained category—it lets the weight of the song hit you while also carrying that hidden message of freedom.
