Scribner Prompt #5

In Module 3, I chose “Free at Last” (CMDFano), which shows how powerfully this spiritual fits into John W. Work’s first category: the call-and-response chant. The song unfolds like a conversation—one voice declares, “Free at last,” and the group affirms it, transforming a personal testimony into a communal celebration. While moments of longer melody and rhythmic drive suggest hints of Work’s other two categories, the heart of the performance lies in its responsive structure, echoing the way spirituals were first sung in community. This form explains why “Free at Last” endured so strongly, even into the Civil Rights era. The call-and-response not only carried the weight of faith and resilience but also invited every singer and listener to join in. Each refrain of “I thank God I’m free at last” becomes more than a lyric—it’s a collective voice of hope, survival, and ultimate freedom.
