Scribner Prompt #4 - Modern Performance of a Spirtual

I chose this performance of “Wade in the Water” by Sweet Honey in the Rock (YouTube link) because it shows how a centuries-old spiritual can still feel alive and urgent today. The song itself has deep roots, carrying both biblical imagery of deliverance and historical meaning as a coded message of resistance during slavery. Sweet Honey in the Rock’s arrangement uses only voices and harmonies, which keeps the focus on the lyrics and emotion, while the live church setting adds intimacy and authenticity. What I love about this performance is how it blends reverence for tradition with a sense of immediacy—reminding us that spirituals are not relics but living songs of faith, hope, and resilience that continue to inspire communities now.
