For my spiritual performance, I chose a jazz group (Theodicy Jazz Collective) performing "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" among other spirituals in a Cincinnati concert. Of course, Swing Low Sweet Chariot is one of, if not the most famous, of the spirituals, but I chose it for a specific reason. I knew, because it was popular, that I would have the most covers and interpretations to pick from. I stumbled upon this jazz group, which was really nice.
I found the blending of jazz and gospel to be tasteful, as they are both entwined with African American history. A jazz interpretation felt right for this song. A 1986 arrangement was being performed; it was jazz, but still with the sacred soul of the original. The lead singer was clearly well-trained. Her voice reminds me of Ella fitagearled minus the scatting.
Here's the performance (Starts at 46:19)
