The most important takeaway I’ve had in this course so far is realizing that spirituals are far more than songs of faith; they are expressions of coded communication, cultural identity, and emotional survival. Before this class, I thought of spirituals mainly as religious music, but I now understand how deeply they were connected to freedom, resistance, and community for enslaved African Americans. Learning about groups like the Fisk Jubilee Singers helped me know how these songs evolved from expressions of struggle and hope into powerful symbols of cultural pride that influenced later genres, such as gospel, blues, and jazz. My light bulb moment came when I recognized the double meaning in many spirituals, songs of Christian devotion, yet messages of liberation and perseverance. This realization helped me appreciate that music served not only as a form of worship but also as a lifeline, allowing people to maintain dignity, faith, and strength in the face of oppression.
